Heart Map! Observational drawing : 1. Drawing helps them to linger, to slow down, and to stay with seeing and reseeing(revisioning), which is at the heart of all writing. 2. Drawing also encourages them to notice details they might not have noticed before. 3. Drawing sharpens their visual sense, which will help them write more concretely and with images. 4. Drawing natural or ordinary objects helps them see poetry in the ordinary, small, and unglamorous. The point of heart mapping is not necessarily to write poems but to access the feelings, memories, and reflections that are the source of poetry: to sharpen our inner vision.
