The forest reveals fragments while concealing the whole, inviting viewers to question whether they are witnessing a real place, a dream, or an inner landscape.

The unseen is not the painter, but the source of creation itself. What follows is not merely speed, but the lingering presence of memory—traces of emotion, instinct, and time that remain long after the moment has passed.
Rather than portraying a destination, the painting invites viewers into the unseen space between motion and remembrance. The story extends beyond the frame, asking us to imagine what cannot be captured by sight alone.

The Quiet Visitor

A white horse emerges softly through snow and silence, carrying an air of familiarity without revealing where it has come from or where it will go. Rather than simply painting what I see, I have always been drawn to expressing the invisible world—those moments of inspiration, quiet emotions, and images that appear in the mind before they ever exist on paper. Many of my paintings are born not from direct observation, but from imagination.

At the same time, I try to be careful.
When creating imaginary worlds, there is always the risk that a painting may become too fantastical and lose its connection to reality. That is something I constantly guard against. I continue revising the work, adding and removing elements until I find a balance where imagination still feels believable and emotionally true.

In this painting, large trees stand firmly rooted in the earth. Their powerful roots symbolize stability and reality. Nestled among them is a solitary artist painting quietly at an easel.

Above the scene, a warm light gently pours down.
Soft clouds drift between the trees like the flowing ink of a traditional East Asian painting. If you look closely, you may notice a small figure resting peacefully on one of the clouds to the left, simply enjoying the scenery.
For me, that hidden figure represents the very moment of painting.
When I paint, I often feel as though nature begins to speak. The trees, the wind, and the changing light seem to respond in their own quiet language. It feels as if the universe gently opens for a moment, inviting me into a conversation beyond words.
Sometimes I no longer feel that I am creating the painting. Instead, I feel that the painting is leading me.

Perhaps that is why painting always brings me such peace. It is more than creating an image—it is a quiet dialogue with nature, a moment of listening rather than speaking.

This artwork is my attempt to express that simple but profound joy: the joy of painting, of imagining, and of discovering a peaceful place where the visible and invisible worlds meet.

I hope that, in some small way, this painting invites others to pause, breathe, and experience that same quiet conversation with nature. Sometimes the most beautiful landscapes are not the ones before our eyes, but the ones that quietly unfold within our hearts.

A Symphony of Summer Colors, Night Heron Watercolor group exhibition in Port Jefferson Gallery.

https://www.annakoh.com/blog/a-symphony-of-summer-colors-night-heron-watercolor-group-exhibition-in-port-jefferson-gallery

https://www.annakoh.com/blog/a-symphony-of-summer-colors-night-heron-watercolor-group-exhibition-in-port-jefferson-gallery#comments

art in a daily life

Exhibition Dates: July 3 – August 3, 2026Location: Night Heron Gallery, Port Jefferson, New YorkSummer is the season when nature reveals its richest palette. The greens become deeper, the sky stretches endlessly in brilliant blue, and sunlight gently filters through the trees. It is a season filled with warmth, light, and quiet inspiration. I am honored to be participating in "A Symphony of Summer Colors," a watercolor group exhibition celebrating the beauty and diversity of summer through the eyes of local artists.

Held at Night Heron Gallery in the charming harbor village of Port Jefferson, New York, this exhibition runs from July 3 through August 3, 2026. The gallery features a collection of watercolor paintings by talented artists, each interpreting the spirit of summer in a unique and personal way. Although we all share the same season as our inspiration, each artist brings a distinctive voice, style, and perspective, creating a beautiful visual harmony—much like the instruments of an orchestra performing a symphony together.

I am grateful to have several of my watercolor paintings included in this exhibition. My work is inspired by the quiet beauty of nature and the peaceful moments that often go unnoticed in our busy lives. Rather than simply painting what I see, I strive to capture the feeling of light, stillness, and atmosphere that nature offers. Whether it is sunlight filtering through a forest, reflections dancing across calm water, or the gentle rhythm of a peaceful landscape, these moments remind me to slow down and truly observe the world around me.

One of my featured paintings explores the warm light shining through a wooded landscape. Watercolor is a medium that beautifully balances intention and spontaneity. As water and pigment flow together across the paper, unexpected textures and transitions naturally emerge. I enjoy embracing these moments of unpredictability because they reflect the organic beauty found in nature itself. The transparent layers of watercolor allow light to become part of the painting, creating a sense of depth and tranquility that I find deeply rewarding.

Another piece in the exhibition captures the quiet beauty of a peaceful shoreline. Water has always fascinated me because it reflects not only the surrounding landscape but also a sense of calm. In today's fast-paced world, we rarely pause long enough to appreciate such simple moments. Through this painting, I hope viewers will take a brief pause, breathe deeply, and reconnect with the peaceful rhythms of nature.

The exhibition also features a wonderful variety of subjects, including floral paintings, portraits, coastal scenes, and landscapes. Walking through the gallery is a reminder of how versatile watercolor can be. Each artist uses the medium differently, demonstrating unique approaches to color, composition, and storytelling. It is always inspiring to see how one medium can express so many different emotions and perspectives.

For me, an exhibition is more than simply displaying finished paintings. I believe that a work of art truly begins a new life when it is viewed by others. Every visitor brings their own memories, experiences, and emotions, allowing each painting to tell a slightly different story. A landscape may remind one person of a childhood vacation, while another may find comfort, hope, or quiet reflection within the same image. This personal connection between artwork and viewer is one of the greatest gifts of art.

Participating in "A Symphony of Summer Colors" has been a meaningful experience. It has given me another opportunity to celebrate the beauty of nature, connect with fellow artists, and share my work with the community. Exhibitions like this remind me that art is not created in isolation—it grows through conversation, shared inspiration, and the relationships built between artists and viewers.

As I continue my artistic journey, I hope to keep exploring the beauty of light, nature, and the expressive possibilities of watercolor. Painting is more than a profession or a hobby for me; it is a daily practice of observation, gratitude, and mindfulness. Every brushstroke becomes an invitation to slow down, appreciate the present moment, and discover beauty in places we might otherwise overlook.

If you happen to visit Port Jefferson this summer, I warmly invite you to stop by Night Heron Gallery and experience "A Symphony of Summer Colors." I hope the exhibition offers you not only beautiful paintings but also a moment of peace, inspiration, and a renewed appreciation for the quiet wonders of the natural world.

<td class="wsite-multicol-col" style="width:50%; Once something becomes part of my everyday life, I find real joy in repeating it. That joy feels almost like a ritual. While I am immersed in the process, I experience a deep sense of peace, much like meditation.

Watercolor brings me that kind of peace.

I begin by wetting the paper until it is evenly damp. Then I load my brush with paint and gently touch it to the surface. From that moment on, the paint knows where it wants to go. It travels on its own, carried by the water. I don't try to control its journey. Instead, I leave it alone as much as possible and simply watch.

I love observing how beautiful patterns emerge out of complete freedom. To me, that experience feels very much like meditation.

The more I paint, the more I realize that watercolor resembles life itself. Things rarely unfold exactly as we plan, yet even within uncertainty, there is a hidden pattern. I simply watch it appear.

Sometimes an unexpected accident creates breathtaking light, luminous colors, and beautiful watercolor blooms. Other times, several colors mix together and become muddy, almost like a swamp. But I don't blame myself when that happens.

Maybe there wasn't enough water. Maybe there was too much. Perhaps the paint had dried a little too much, or maybe I worked too slowly. There are countless reasons.

I simply accept what happened.

That's all.

When the painting is finished, it seems to whisper to me,
"This is still my story. Thank you for listening."
That is why I love watercolor so deeply.

Its true medium is water, and listening to the story that water tells brings me genuine happiness. That's why I enjoy letting the colors spread just a little farther than expected, embracing that delicate moment when everything feels beautifully unpredictable. I treasure those clear, transparent, and spontaneous moments that exist only once.

I plan to continue this work throughout the summer.
One of my favorite routines is painting watercolor postcards. I enjoy making them so much that I sometimes lose track of preparing for larger exhibitions. If I could, I would happily spend every available moment filling these small pieces of paper with paintings.

I want to paint every bit of beauty this world has to offer, even though I know no one could ever capture it all.
So this summer will be another busy one.

These little paintings often sell quickly. Sometimes they become birthday cards. Sometimes they become thank-you cards. Before long, it's time to begin painting a new collection for the following year.

But I never mind.
The act of painting has already rewarded me more than enough.
Spending my summer becoming busier because of something I truly love feels like a gift.
Recently, I bought display pockets for my wall so I could showcase these postcards. Every time I finish a painting, I slip it into one of the pockets. They're almost completely full now.
I plan to display the entire collection just as it is at this year's outdoor art show.

This summer, I hope to paint as many scenes of the sea and the season as I can. More than anything, I hope my watercolor paintings can share the beauty of flowing colors and the quiet joy of simply watching them find their own way.

<td class="wsite-multicol-col" style="width:50%; The second was for the Night Heron Summer Exhibition, where I am delighted to participate as a member artist.

Every time I leave a painting behind for an exhibition, I quietly hope that it will touch someone's heart. While creating these paintings, I experienced genuine happiness and found comfort myself. That is one of the greatest gifts of making art.
In the busyness of everyday life, nature continues to offer me a place of rest and renewal. Capturing the inspiration I find there has always been one of the most meaningful parts of my artistic journey. Every tree, every reflection on the water, and every quiet moment reminds me to slow down and simply observe.

No matter how busy life becomes, I treasure having even a single day to visit a gallery and spend time with art. Ever since I was a child, I have loved both creating paintings and looking at them.

When I lived in Germany, galleries were everywhere, and it was easy to visit exhibitions regularly. Since moving here, opportunities to see original artwork haven't always been as accessible. Thankfully, our local museums and galleries have continued to fill that role beautifully. Without places like these, our communities would feel much less colorful—a world without galleries would be a world painted only in black and white.

It has also been encouraging to watch the local art community grow since I first arrived here in 2013. There are more exhibitions, more community events, and a wider variety of visitors than ever before. Long-running exhibitions that continue year after year give artists confidence, encouragement, and a sense of belonging. I am sincerely grateful for every opportunity to participate.

When artists deliver their work, the gallery staff carefully checks each piece—the size, the hanging wire, and the information attached to the back. Every detail matters. The curators always greet artists with kindness and professionalism, and I am deeply thankful for all the work they do behind the scenes.

An exhibition is never created by one person alone. It is the result of the dedication of artists, curators, volunteers, organizers, and countless others working together. I hope this exhibition becomes a wonderful celebration of everyone's hard work and passion.

As for me, today's gallery visits have inspired me to keep going. This summer, I hope to challenge myself to create even more paintings, continue growing as an artist, and share more moments of peace and beauty through my work.
