The second day of My Portfolio week! Today is the second day of My Portfolio Day. The theme is about internal energy. My flower shop is a place that doesn't sell real flowers but ones on paper. If you don't throw my flowers away on purpose, they won't wither instead and stay with you for a long time. My painting flower will retain many feelings and power compared to no energy anymore when the natural flower shrinks. At the Jeju 4.3(Jeju uprising) incident, my father was eight years old. My grandfather was the principal of the elementary school in Jeju. On the 4.3th, 1948, armed men from the South Korean Labor Party gathered people from schools, city halls, and houses in one place and shot them. At the time, my grandfather passed away. Before he went to paradise, he held my father's little hand tightly and cried. In April, Jeju Island is a beautiful season when the camellia flowers blossom colorful and red. But the camellias of that days flew over and covered the blood of many innocent citizens who were executed for ideology.
One day, I wanted to capture the Hope that this little bird conveyed. With the most Korean colors, I drew it with only When I was in Korea, I was taught that I must always be the same style as my affiliated group. Maybe that's why I felt freedom when I saw the colorfully various mailboxes on the streets of America. The diversity of life gives me tremendous freedom and broadens my view of the world. It is a picture I drew after waking up from a dream in the morning. One day in my dream, I saw a baby horse running. It was a bright sunny day, but I could hear the thunder far away as if it seemed to start a storm. I was looking somewhere through a window. Surprisingly, I discovered a beautiful rainbow in the sky. In the blink of an eye, the rainbow was set like a jewel on the back of a calf running. At that moment, my heart was filled with hope, escaping from the anxiety brought by the thunder. At night, the bustling noises of the world disappear promptly, and only then can you entirely focus on yourself. Ironically, the truth is that the self that is wholly felt without all the trophies or accessories in the world is the true ego. Perhaps the loneliness and emptiness

Last month, I reminded myself of my early debut works and exhibitions through the My Art Festival. Since I made a timetable wrote and uploaded pictures in the order of time, I think that day was the most relaxing time for me to start blogging. Based on this experience, I have learned from experience that writing is much easier, and it is better to post continuously in this way by grouping the main topics, sub-topics, and themes in advance. Above all, writing by theme reduces the difficulty of finding titles and subjects or writing articles when other tasks besides blogging are waiting for an order or when you are busy with other tasks. In this sense, I have designated this week as Portfolio Week from Monday to Friday. I want to study more about the work I am currently doing and doing. I had to organize my portfolio from the past to the present. My Portfolio week. Materials that are systematically organized by theme will be very helpful when making an e-book by binding, publishing a book, or organizing one theme on a website in the future. In my case, it was good to be able to personally describe the meaning of my work and explain the process well to painting lovers and customers. The themes of my portfolio will be introduced by grouping them into the following themes. 1. Dynamic Energy 2. Internal Energy 3. Female Energy 4. Digital Energy Most of all, I feel intense energy from trees standing, bending, moving, and dropping its most substantial part to persevere and overcome the hardships of many years.
Tree branches are swaying between the apartments at night. Countless square lights from the apartment windows are reflected brightly between trees. The force of nature I felt was always grand and overwhelming. Sometimes when the heavy rain and wind blew strong enough, I felt fear and phobia. However, children who grow up in cities have fewer opportunities to feel this nature's power. Trapped in a high concrete building, they cannot afford to experience listening to the message of nature. Therefore, they believe that nature is always insignificant. The trees in my paintings completely reject the artificial energy emanating from the stainless framed window emitted by these apartments. They somehow move and try to show their presence in front of us. All ordinary people are isolated in the same space and monotonous life. The city trees send an infinite message to modern people who do not feel the energy of nature. They constantly stand with shaking and rustling. Especially, "Weeping Tree" reflects the worries and fears I felt about climate change. First, I draw mountains layer by layer in the background, then fill the brush with paint and lots of water and touch it in the middle on canvas. Then, raise the canvas at a right angle, lay it down. The process will cause the paint from above to naturally fall to the floor due to gravity. It is as if the canvas is crying. It is the technique for describing that pouring rain in the sky. A visitor told me some interesting points while this painting was on display. "I found Noah's ark behind the picture." A tree is a great mentor in our life. Even though trees are twisted, badly transformed, and fallen, they keep their pride and live their way. They stand alone and write their history by themselves, not borrowing the hands of others. When your independent energy is gone in your mind, your life is controlled by others. If someone manipulates your thought and plans, you can't live your life freely. Trees don't follow others' orders. Hangeul as an Art Living in a foreign country as a Korean, I learned a foreign language first, made friends with local persons, and adapted to that their culture, customs, rules, climate, and food. It is the usual adaptation process that immigrants must follow as a routine for survival. But there is such a thing. It is said that anyone who leaves the country automatically becomes a real patriot. Only those who have left their homeland can feel it is a special feeling with nostalgia. In other words, the story means that things that you took for granted, like air, no longer take for granted, and you come to realize the importance and meaning of your hometown and country that you didn't know before. As I recognize the experience one by one, I am building my identity as immigrants and Koreans. In particular, when living as a Korean in a foreign country and interacting with the people in those countries, I get many questions about Korea. The first question is about Korean, Hanguel. It is said that there are about 7,000 languages in our world. Korean is one of them, and it is a language-specific to Korea (75 million speaker), not a language most spoken by many like English, Mandarin, Hindi and Spanish, etc. Therefore then did I have to explain Korean in my own way. Above all, I get excited when I meet people interested in our language. It contains a lot of curiosity, mysterious spirit, and pioneering spirit as if revealing an unknown world. Especially, Hangul looks like a code or password for foreigners to see. It's because it's not a typical alphabetic system, and it's not a Mandarin-like Chinese character. It's completely different. The consonants of Hangeul are modeled after the shape of the human pronunciation organ, and the vowels are modeled after the basic things of the world, such as the sky, earth, and people. Korean is Like English, it is a phonetic character that expresses sounds with letters. Still, in English, notes are made by listing vowels and consonants, whereas in Korean, vowels, and consonants are assembled like Lego blocks to make letters. Also, sounds come together to express meaning, and each letter does not have a meaning, so there is no need to memorize the purpose, meaning, and pronunciation of every letter like Mandarine. Since the letters are made according to how they pronounce, you can make a sound according to the shape of the letter backward, and you can write the letters as you make the sound. Because of these characteristics, the practicality of Hangul is amplified when it is combined with a computer system or mobile keyboard. The Hangul keyboard consists of 19 consonants and 21 vowels, so anyone who knows Hangul can quickly enter Hangul using the keyboard without any special training or additional supporting system. Hangeul, which is currently conveniently used by Koreans, has the characteristic that it is clearly known who made it, when it was made, and on what principle it was made. The origin of Hangeul was created by King Sejong the Great, the king of the Joseon Dynasty in 1446. King, Sejong felt heartbroken that ordinary people were not correctly finding their rights as human beings while living without letters. They tried to appeal to the government office, but there was no way to appeal. Even after an unfair trial, there was no way to demand that they be corrected, and even if they tried to write a letter, they could not do it because they didn't learn the complex Chinese characters. Above all, there was no way to keep a simple record of agricultural work. Their work were transferred to junior farmer only with verbal order. Without any record, they couldn't get any knowledge for using and upgrade their skills and life styles. Sejong was a heart warm king who felt very sorry for the plight of the people and had an innovative character with solid subjectivity. Sejong realized that Chinese is written by special heirarcial people, even if I borrowed Chinese characters to write Korean, it was very awkward, and I could not convey the meaning correctly. On the other hand, it seems that the situation was equipped with various conditions to create new characters. King Sejong created 28 Hunminjeongeum in 1443 and published a book called Hunminjeongeum in September 1446 by the lunar calendar with detailed explanations (interpretations) and usage examples (examples). There are several names for Hangeul. When King Sejong invented Hangeul, it was called 'Hunminjeongeum', which means 'the right sound to teach the people. [Source: Encyclopedia of Korean National Culture (Korean)] According to the Hunminjeongeum Haeryebon, Hangeul was created according to the yin-yang principle and five elements. According to the Yin-Yang Five Elements theory(陰陽五行論), all the separate phenomena of the universe or humans appear in pairs of yin and yang (bottom-up, low-high, female-male). The Five Elements theory states that all things in the universe are created and destroyed by performing the five elements of gold (金), water (水), wood (木), fire (火), and earth (土) according to the principle of yin and yang(五土). They got hints from nature and the principles of the universe and life and encoded them according to the high and low flow of energy. That's why, Korean is like Cubics, if you assemble each one, one letter is completed. Instead of arranging consonants and vowels one after the other, they are three-dimensionally inserted up, down, left, and right to create one letter. In addition, the vast amount of data such as the flow of energy, nature, and the order and principle of the universe is visually simplified as shown below. In a word, it is the perfect application of minimalism to linguistics. While using Hangeul, I was surprised that 500 years ago, humankind had the wisdom to create characters by simplifying data into a scientific framework. Characters and languages are created through the accumulation of time and experience with many trial and errors. So it's unclear where the letters came from, who made them, and when. To make a language need many times and experiences. Many people use it a lot, and it is refined over a long time. However, in the case of Hangeul, it was made in a short period out of necessity. However, there is no difficulty in writing so far, and since it is a character that writes the sound as it is, it is effective as a language to learn and use for instance when some tribe has only the sound without any letters, and it can be transmitted to a tribe that does not have their own letter practically. It is the case with Ciaccia, an indigenous language spoken by about 70,000 Ciaccia people living in Baubau, Buton Island, Indonesia. It was in danger of disappearing soon, as there was no unique script to write the language, and history and culture could not be recorded. 'Hangeul teacher' Jeong Deok-young was first dispatched to the Chiachia village and taught Korean directly there. Hangeul is useful for tribes with non-literate languages, as all sounds can be written down. Above all, when I look at Hangeul from an artistic point of view, I am amazed at its simplicity and beauty. The shape of nature has been simplified with points, lines, and planes like the elements of art. The point, Line, and Plane are the most fundamental design elements. Hanguel designed by simplified basic element to indicate the human organ for pronunciation. In a nutshell, human is representative as human pronouncial organs as consonant and the energy of nature as vowels have been combined in a letter. The human and nature combines the two results in one character. A long time ago, people already knew the energy in nature and the universe, and they created letters by responding to human organs. This is different from other languages that have been simplified by imitating the shape of objects, and put it the meaning and pronunciation. In other words, it is the principle of bringing the philosophical theory to create a languages and tried to express the universal true that eventually becoming one with nature and humans. I plan to write another separate post with a separate topic on the process of creating Hangeul based on these oriental philosophical thoughts. May this spring come with a great blessing. In Korea, today is Ipchun(立春), which marks the beginning of spring. Ip Chun is the first season of the new year, so there are many farming-related events. In Ip chun, families, regardless of the city or countryside, put their writings (Four chinese letter) on walls or thresholds as a blessing event. As shown below, Ipchundae-gil was written in prominent Chinese characters and pasted on the door. I saw this kind of scenery a lot when I was a kid, but this custom holds up in the fortress. It is also called 'Ipchunbang' or 'Ipchunchuk.' It refers to writing a phrase to pray for good things to happen on the walls and doors of the house on Ipchun. Ipchundae-gil (立春大吉) Meaning: When spring begins, make it a big blessing (meaning that when spring begins, good things will happen). Farmers used to pull out the barley roots and use the number of roots to predict whether the crop would go well in the next year. 3 is a bountiful crop, 2 is an average crop, and if there is none, a poor harvest. A prediction related to this spring is Groundhog Day in the United States. It derives from the Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that if a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day and sees its shadow due to clear weather, it will retreat to its den, and winter will go on for six more weeks. Otherwise, if it does not see its shadow because of cloudiness, spring will arrive early. February 2nd every year is Groundhog Day. In the United States, this day is not a National Holiday, but on February 2nd, related events are held in each region. The groundhog, also known as a woodchuck, is a rodent of the family Sciuridae, belonging to the group of large ground squirrels known as marmots. The groundhog is a lowland creature of North America; it is found through much of the Eastern United States, across Canada and into Alaska. (by wikipedia) It looks just like a cute mixture of a hedgehog and a mole. Ground Hog Day is a fortune-telling event with this animal called Ground Hog, and a movie related to it was released in 1993. Groundhog Day is a 1993 American fantasy comedy film directed by Harold Ramis and written by Ramis and Danny Rubin. It stars Bill Murray, Andie MacDowell and Chris Elliott. The main character, Phil Connors, a cynical television weatherman went to in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania covering the annual Groundhog Day event. But after the winter storm, he is stuck in the village and also becomes trapped in a time loop mysteriously, forcing him to relive February 2nd repeatedly. In Korea, this movie was introduced under the title Black Hole of Love because it has a motif of a time loop. The Groundhog Day is depicted in this film. Germany has many dark and rainy days, so more and more people eagerly await spring. That's why we hold a big festival to commemorate this day. In addition to spring, summer, autumn, and winter, Germans consider the long festivals held throughout Germany as another season and say there are five seasons in Germany. The fifth season in Germany, the festival runs from November to the end of February. The last two days of the festival signify the end of the long winter and the welcome of spring. Below is a picture of Fashing I attended while living in Germany. Waiting for spring in various forms and announcing the beginning of spring, the feeling of overcoming the long winter and waiting for the beautiful flowers to bloom seems to be the same. In the past, there was a time when I drew a picture with a heart waiting for spring desperately. When I lived in Germany for the first time, spring in Germany felt too short. Even in April, Germany is still cold and snowy. It is not until late May that you can see birds chirping and flowers blooming. The flowers blooming at this time were bright and beautiful with long waiting and hope. In the sense of waiting for spring, I made a digital image of spring. It is an image of trees with yellow-green leaves that can only be seen in spring, rabbits and animals that appear out of nowhere, young fish, festivals, and flowers. Below are the results of the year 2022 of the Groundhog Day described above. Most of the results suggest that we may have to wait another 6 weeks for spring. Artist may suffer from shoulder pain, which is one of the occupational diseases. This kind of pain is always tagged as artists because they spend a lot of time in the same posture or using their hands, arms, and shoulders while painting or working. And the more they draw and work for a long time, the more severe the pain. Shoulder pain may be temporary, or it may continue and require medical diagnosis and treatment. Above all, it is a problem with the shoulder muscles or surrounding bones and a high probability of pain radiating from internal organs. How to prevent shoulder pain as an artist? Then, if the cause is limited to muscle pain and can be improved with light exercise, it is recommended to manage it with exercise or yoga. Today's post isn't about medical expertise. It's about exercises to prevent joint shoulder pain. Most of all, I am well aware of the difficulties of doing something consistently. For example, it is good to stretch for 10 minutes every morning and evening to prevent shoulder pain for ritual exercise. But it is challenging to keep it every day. The best thing I've come up with is to draw a stretch, stick it on a wall, and practice it every day in the same spot. I recommend making your own cozy and fancy place to practice while looking at the stretching poster. In that sense, I illustrated stretching to prevent shoulder pain. The contents are based on the contents provided by Seoul National University Bundang Hospital in Korea in commemoration of 'Shoulder Joint Week' set by the Korean Shoulder and Elbow Joint Association. (Illustration by Myungja Anna Koh) 1. Anterior elevation (raise) exercise - With the pillow removed, lay down while looking at the ceiling. - With the elbow of the sore arm extended, hold the elbow of the painful arm with the opposite arm and push upward until it touches the floor above your head. - Raise it until pain occurs, hold it for 5 to 10 seconds, and then slowly return to the original state. -Repeat this movement 10 to 15 times. 2. adduction (gathering) exercise - With the pillow removed, lay down while looking at the ceiling. - With the elbow of the sore arm extended, use the opposite hand to grab the elbow part of the painful arm and pull it toward the normal shoulder. - Pull until pain occurs, hold it for 5 to 10 seconds, and then slowly return to the original position. -Repeat this movement 10 to 15 times. 3. External rotation (outward rotation) movement - With the pillow removed, lie down and look at the ceiling. - With your head interlaced, a family member around you gently presses the elbow of the painful arm toward the floor below. -Press until pain occurs, hold it for 5-10 seconds, and then slowly return to the original state. -Repeat this movement 10 to 15 times. 4. Internal rotation (inward rotation) movement -Only this movement is performed on a pillow. - Place the affected shoulder in close contact with the floor and lie on the side with the shoulder cut. At this time, it is effective for the painful shoulder, back, and buttocks to touch the wall. - With your arms outstretched so that the aching arm and torso maintain a 90-degree angle, hold the affected wrist with your normal hand and gently press down. -Press until pain occurs, hold it for 5-10 seconds, and then slowly return to the original state. -Repeat this movement 10 to 15 times. 5. Rotator cuff strengthening exercise : Turn inward - Securely tie a rubber band to the door at waist height to be about 30-50 cm high. -Grab the rubber band with your elbow at a right angle of 90 degrees, put a small towel on your armpit, and gently pull the rubber band toward your stomach while keeping the towel under your armpit from falling off. At this time, pull up to the pain-free range, stop at the top position for 5-10 seconds, and then slowly return to the original state. 6. Turn out -Fix the rubber band in the opposite position to the inward turning movement. Hold the rubber band with your elbow at a right angle of 90 degrees, put a small towel on your armpit, and gently pull the rubber band out of your body without letting the towel fall off your armpit. -At this time, pull slowly to a pain-free range, stop at the top position for 5-10 seconds, and slowly return to the original state. Below is a poster image that can be hung on the wall. This is made as an illustration for easy exercise by hanging it on the wall to prevent shoulder pain. |
