Congratulations at the Suffolk level of 2023-2024 reflection program!Congratulations to student, Miro for winning at the Suffolk level of this year's Reflections program. National PTA has a long-standing commitment to arts education. The Reflections program provides opportunities for recognition and access to the arts which boost student confidence and success in the arts and in life. The Reflections Program is a National PTA and New York State PTA cultural arts competition that gives students confidence in their abilities to explore ideas and learn through the arts! Each year hundreds of thousands of students in preschool through grade 12 create and submit original works in the areas of dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts. Students participate in the Reflections program in the division for their grade: primary (pre-K to grade 2), intermediate (grades 3-5), middle school (grades 6-8), high school (grades 9-12) and special artist (all grades welcome). Below is the theme for the 2023 contest.

Practice and effort make perfect. When you think about common sense, bumblebees are bees that cannot fly because their wings are too small compared to their bodies. Aerodynamically, the wings must create a reaction force that lifts the body through repeated movements in the air. And when calculated physically, the wings must be wide enough in proportion to the body. However, this bumblebee defies common sense and flies well. The reason they are able to overcome their physical limitations and fly is simple. They fly because they need to fly to survive. They must fly because they are bees, and they fly because they know who they are. This firm will and belief in self-identity and self-direction is what makes bumblebees flap their small wings more than 200 times per second. We can see that commonly mentioned conditions, objective standards, judgments, do not tell everything. Likewise, what is essential when drawing is practice and effort rather than talent. Rather than thinking that you are not good at drawing, think that you have to draw and practice like Bumblebee struggling, one day you will reach that level. I am finding this case with my students. At first, my students drew pictures as if they were drawing several paper dolls on white paper in a world without space or depth. The painting had no composition, texture or precise shape. But I saw love and passion for pure and beautiful art in their paintings. And after struggling and practice and effort, I discover that they are turning into wonderful paintings with their own unique colors, compositions, and a dynamic feel. This is truly an amazing change. Every time I discover these changes, I work more diligently in the hope that students will break their limits and flap their wings higher. I strive to provide opportunities to develop and introduce new techniques to further challenge my students. I am well aware that this process is also helping me grow step by step as an artist. Most of all, I love seeing the sparkle in my students' eyes and energy as they learn to draw. When anyone seriously engages with art, they get these sparkling, jewel-like eyes. This is an invisible gift that art gives us.
National Wind Energy Art by studentsStarting this week, my students have been drawing pictures for National Wind Energy Art. The process of preparing these pictures is educational and meaningful. Above all, it has the advantage of not just drawing pictures, but also learning about clean energy and windmill principles. When students first draw a picture with the concept of wind energy art, they will first think of a windmill spinning powerfully in a field. My students also drew a windmill towering over a beautiful landscape. In Sophia's case, a girl wearing a mask created a meaningful view of the windmill. It is impressive to see a hot air balloon in the distance. We will develop these pictures further. And you will learn how to create meaningful images with a single concept. All about Magic!!The pictures below are children's drawings freely drawn on the theme of magic. The topic of magic gives children endless and limitless imagination. A boundless sense of wonder lies at the heart of children's paintings about magic. In their eyes, the world is not confined by the laws of physics or the constraints of reality. Instead, it is a canvas upon which they can unleash their imagination and explore the limitless possibilities of the unknown. Whether it's a shimmering castle in the clouds or a hidden realm beneath the ocean's surface, every stroke of paint carries with it the promise of adventure and discovery. In addition to exploring the external manifestations of magic, children's paintings also delve into its deeper meanings and symbolism.
In a world that often feels bound by rules and limitations, children's paintings remind us of the magic that lies within us all, waiting to be unleashed with a single brushstroke. Our awarded students! The 2023 SAVE THE FROGS! Art Contest received 1,842 entries, from 1,681 participants in 69 countries! Olivia's work has been selected as a finalist.
