The Wild RobotPeter Brown's first children's novel, Wild Robot, was written and illustrated by him. I watched this story as a movie with my family. This movie is an educational movie that my child's school teacher showed to the children. I watched it with my child who was moved by the movie and recommended it. And I am grateful to my child's teacher for introducing this movie. This story is educational and contains many lessons such as maternal love, communication with nature, environmental protection, relationship with artificial intelligence, our future, spirit of challenge, love, etc. My child wants to share this story with me. I think that movies that children love definitely have a great message. Therefore, I think it is a beneficial movie that can be talked about a lot with children if watched with them.
The story begins when Roz, a robot that completes missions for customers, is stranded on an uninhabited island after a storm while sailing on a ship. She is lucky enough to arrive on the island undamaged, but the island is barren and dominated by animals. Roz is put in a situation where she must survive without understanding her mission or purpose of existence. At first, she seems awkward and unfamiliar with the island, but as she gradually explores and understands her surroundings, she demonstrates her instinctive survival skills as a robot. One of the major turning points in the story is when Roz adopts and raises a young goose named Brightbill. Brightbill acts as Roz’s mother and teaches her the importance of emotional connection. Through this process, Roz develops an instinctive desire to protect animals and nature, and gradually comes to realize the value of life. Roz, a robot with a female personality ‘programmed’ into a female, takes care of a baby goose hatched from the only remaining egg after a family of geese dies due to her own mistake. Through Roz’s care, the baby goose ‘Brightbill’ grows into a fine young man, and through this, Rose, who was once treated as a ‘monster’, gradually comes to be accepted by the animals, which is the main plot of the story. Above all, the scene where the animals that were initially attacking and fighting each other seek ‘coexistence’ under Rose’s influence, and Roz, who was only interested in completing her mission, takes a step closer to love and growth as Brightville learns to swim and flap her wings is enough to be relatable even if you apply it to the human world. The scene where the emotionless robot seems to understand human maternal love and love and has personality beyond programming is interesting. This makes you think about the differences and relationships between humans and robots. I looked at this story from a different perspective. That is, it is a story about human survival in the age of artificial intelligence. I often hear stories of people around me who have lost their jobs or are at risk of losing their jobs due to the development of artificial intelligence and technology. These stories hurt my heart the moment I heard them. In some cases, the bright smiles of artificial intelligence engineers who smile and boast about their skills and abilities in the media feel burdensome. Do they know that the technology they have developed will eventually trivialize humanity and threaten human survival? This is an argument that everyone is afraid of. My children’s generation is a generation that is very familiar with technology. They are like the baby goose Brightbill who grew up under Roz, and they have no aversion to technology and grow up under their babysitting. So they will grow up like Brightbill, who imitates the content and technology they provide. People in my era, who have lived through the analog era, will worry about this generation. However, I want to look at all of this positively, like a movie. On the one hand, I am surprised and worried about the rapid development of technology, but on the other hand, I believe in the possibility of love, maternal love, and survival skills that humans have. I think this message is in this movie. In the end, it is like all living creatures joining forces to overcome the crisis that has come and practicing great love beyond the boundaries between humans and technology. In this regard, I am glad that I have the opportunity to have enough conversations with my children.
