The Art of Drawing HandsRecently, I have been guiding my studio and SchoolNova students through the study of hand anatomy and drawing. Understanding the structure of the hand is essential but also one of the most challenging aspects of figure drawing. When I first created this lesson plan, I was honestly nervous. I worried that the students might find it too difficult and lose interest, perhaps even decide not to come back the next week. But to my surprise, the opposite happened. The students were full of energy and focus. The classroom soon became filled with the soft sound of pencils and erasers—no words, just deep concentration. Each student immersed themselves completely in their work, and one by one, they produced drawings that were thoughtful, precise, and full of life. Watching their progress was deeply moving. Through this experience, I learned once again the power of believing in my students. What I had feared would be “too hard” became an opportunity for them to rise to the challenge. When I chose not to tell them that something was difficult, but instead showed confidence in their ability, they responded with incredible dedication. Their sincerity and quiet determination reminded me of why I love teaching art. This project was more than just a drawing lesson—it was a shared journey of growth and courage. The hand drawings they completed were not only technical studies but also personal records of persistence and discovery. Seeing their work reminded me of the importance of trusting the process, both as an educator and as an artist. Going forward, I want to continue encouraging my students to embrace challenges and explore what they believe might be beyond their limits. This experience taught me to choose faith over fear. I am deeply grateful to my students for giving me this precious reminder and for allowing me to learn and grow alongside them. A reflection on teaching hand anatomy drawing at SchoolNova—how trust, focus, and courage turned a difficult lesson into an inspiring experience.
