Starting Orthodontic Treatment Later in Life: My Invisalign JourneyI began orthodontic treatment later in life. Specifically, I started using Invisalign—an advanced and nearly invisible method of straightening teeth. Unlike traditional metal braces, Invisalign uses clear aligners and is generally more comfortable and less painful. My issue was an open bite, and in the past, surgery was the only way to fix it. So I left it untreated, thinking it couldn’t be changed. I had simply accepted it as part of who I was. However, last year, my regular dentist introduced me to Invisalign and encouraged me to consider it. I hesitated, wondering if it was too late. I didn’t even feel significant discomfort anymore. But my dentist shared a story about a 70-year-old patient who had started Invisalign after seeing her 90-year-old mother regret not doing it earlier. That story made a strong impression on me, and I decided to give it a try. Despite all the articles I read online, starting treatment wasn’t easy. The first step—applying the attachments—was painful and left me exhausted that day. I also had to wear the aligners for more than 16 hours daily, which was mentally demanding. In the beginning, taking them in and out was difficult. My gums were irritated, and the pain took time to subside. Traveling or going out became more complicated, and keeping the aligners safe was another concern. Each aligner is numbered. You wear one set for two weeks, then switch. Every six weeks, I return to the clinic to receive four new aligners and monitor progress. Occasionally, the dentist shaves the teeth slightly to make room for movement. Each time I switch to a new set, I experience some tightness and pain—but it’s become bearable with time. It’s been five months now, and my teeth are aligning beautifully. Here are some tips I’ve discovered:
Brushing with attachments takes extra care, and my dentist warned me to prevent cavities. Also, do not eat anything while wearing the aligners—only water is safe. Follow this rule strictly. Inserting the aligners becomes easier over time. You just take them out before meals and put them back in after brushing. Orthodontic treatment is a bit like changing habits. It’s hard at first, but you get used to it, and the results are rewarding. I plan to enjoy this 18-month journey and share my results later. If you have a case like mine, don’t be afraid to try. It’s not too late, and after just five months, I’m already very satisfied. I hope this helps anyone considering Invisalign as an adult! I began Invisalign treatment at 50+ to correct an open bite once thought fixable only by surgery. Here’s my detailed 5-month journey with clear aligners, including tips, pain points, and what I’ve learned so far about adult orthodontics. Comments are closed.
