Heartfelt Tribute to Texas from New YorkThe I Am Texas art contest was more than just a drawing project—it gave our students a special opportunity to reflect on the meaning of “place” and connection. Although we are based in New York, not everyone here is originally from this state. In fact, one of the most unique aspects of living in New York is how people from all over the country and world come together, each bringing their own stories, memories, and roots. Among our students are those who moved from Texas, and others who may have never been there but admire its culture, landscape, and spirit. That’s why the theme I Am Texas resonated even with students outside of Texas. Each child interpreted the idea in their own way—some focused on the history and food of Texas, while others expressed its natural beauty, symbols, and spirit with imagination and care. America is one nation made up of many states, cultures, and communities—like a beautiful puzzle. This contest reminded us that through art, we can connect those pieces and celebrate them together. Our students showed their love, curiosity, and respect for Texas through their artwork, and we as educators were moved to see how open-hearted and thoughtful they are becoming through this experience. In this way, art becomes a powerful bridge that connects individuals with different backgrounds and identities. Even when we come from different places or cultures, we can understand and empathize with one another through the shared language of creativity. Watching students express Texas in their own unique ways reminded us that art not only fosters creativity, but also brings unity through diversity within a community. As I prepared for this contest alongside my students, I had the opportunity to communicate with organizers and representatives from different institutions involved. Through these interactions, I came to truly appreciate how many people—often working behind the scenes—are deeply committed to supporting children's education and community development. Their quiet dedication inspired gratitude and admiration.
When they spoke about their passion for art, I felt an immediate connection—as if we were speaking the same language from the heart. These conversations weren’t just about logistics or coordination; they became spaces for sharing values, exchanging ideas, and affirming our shared purpose in using art as a tool for meaningful growth. With every interaction, I could sense this collective movement expanding--like a growing wave of positive impact reaching more and more people. This wave ripples outward, gently but powerfully transforming lives and communities. I feel proud and grateful that my students and I can be part of it. Art brings people together—and through that connection, it creates lasting, meaningful change in the world.
