First day of Picture book making camp! With the start of July, my summer art book camp also began. This year will be an even busier summer as more students sign up for camp. The first students to cut the starting tape are Miro and Kaylee. In particular, Miro is one of my students who has the talent to compose and lead original stories on his own. I often find it surprising that he is only 7 years old. The title of his book in this camp is The Happy Tree. He designed an attractive book cover with a creative idea by writing the word sad and putting an X on it. Miro planned to create a story about how his favorite tree in the park was one day cut down to be made into furniture, and the process of rescuing this tree. I'm really looking forward to his book. Kaylee is a new student who participated in this camp. Although she is not yet 5 years old, she is very smart. She will try to learn how to draw her shape accurately and begin her journey to express her own image in painting. Her favorite objects are space, rabbits, and flowers. Appropriate for her age, I will encourage her to enjoy the process of creating her book and to express her inspiration and imagination in a tangible book. I'm truly looking forward to this journey with her. Because Kaylee could not write freely yet, she drew pictures, Sellina created the text, and she talked about it with Sellina to make up a story to create a storybook. She is confident in her writing and has now developed the ability to create stories from images. I know for sure that this book camp develops storytelling skills in children that make invisible ideas and imagery concrete.
