A painting with the same value as a jewelValue is the importance that humans have in their relationship with an object, or the value or usefulness of an object, and in economic terms, it is the utility of a product or asset. The word value is widely used in many fields. In the field of economics, value refers to the property that a product has. The value of a product can be viewed as two things: use value and exchange value. In everyday life, use value is more important than exchange value, but in economics, exchange value is more important than use value. Use value is related to the usefulness or purpose of a product. In principle, there is no way to measure use value. The true value of a product is measured by the cost invested in producing the product, such as labor, materials, and equipment. Therefore, exchange value is also called labor value or production value. Recently, I have been participating in Bible study every Tuesday morning. I am learning 1 Corinthians here. I remember learning the Bible briefly when I was in college, and it continues to influence me. For me, the good thing about Bible study is that I can make new discoveries in my daily life. The word that struck my heart in this study was 'you were bought with a price'. I was deeply curious about this sentence. Because there are so many words in the Bible that are precious enough to count love and value, why did they use the word 'price' in particular? This word 'price' is a very important and insoluble task for artists, so I think the words 'price' and 'value' stood out to me. The summary is that we should value ourselves because we paid a price. Economists also see value in various ways in their definitions of price and value, but they also define true value as the value of one's own self that is the best, and that one must live knowing that one's value is precious. (Baek Jong-chan, Advisory Committee Chairman of Hwaseong Today, Korea) When I draw, I think about the 'value' of my paintings. Because wealthy people can easily open their wallets for paints on paper, but I know very well how difficult a decision this is for those who do not have the means. So, in order to increase accessibility to art, I try to lower the price of my paintings when I sell them in places open to the public. Let's say you are thinking of buying a brand jacket for your child's birthday. Then, you happen to find a painting you really want at an art show. And the price of the painting is the same as the jacket. What would you buy? You would probably give up the painting and buy the jacket. However, as an artist, I have often found that people buy paintings instead of jackets after holding many exhibitions. Every time that happens, I am more distressed by whether the value of my painting can be compared to that of your precious child's jacket than by the joy of selling the painting. And I try to make it more valuable than that. What is price after all? When I pay a price for something and buy it, it means that I have given up the value of something else. I could have bought something more valuable or a product, but I gave it up and bought a painting. In other words, price is the definition and movement of value. And the price is not an exact number of dollars, but just a number that moves due to value. Because price is very relative depending on various situations of people. I once sold a beautiful painting called 'Queen of the Night'. An old gentleman bought this painting for his granddaughter. He said he was going to give it to her as a birthday present. At that time, it was the price of an iPad. The old gentleman probably gave up buying an iPad and bought the painting. In this sense, I think the value of the painting is more than an iPad. And I think the heart of the gentleman who gave the invisible beauty and value of art to his granddaughter is worth more than that. This is the basic spirit of art and the value of art. I recently finished framing a painting for a holiday exhibition. The title of the small painting painted in watercolor is 'Daily Bread'. I chose this title because I wanted to paint the most simple and warm painting in the world. And I chose the most ornate frame for this painting, which is the complete opposite of the painting. I usually choose simple frames for my paintings. I use the simplest and least expensive materials because I know that people change frames after buying paintings. But this painting is an exception. I needed a 'device' to emphasize the simplicity of this painting. I hope that people will see the beauty of this small, simple painting more than the shiny frame. If there is someone who knows this value, I believe they will buy this painting. I believe that such a person is worthy of being the owner of this painting.
