A Day of Books, Coffee, and Art — A Little Memorial Day JourneyA bookstore and gallery space that I came across after a short walk. Old wooden floor, vintage orange chairs, art books filling the walls. A book I came across there — Van Gogh and the Artists He Loved. It tells the story of the artists Van Gogh loved, and imagines the world his eyes lingered in. Another impression I encountered while flipping through the book: Hokusai’s “The Great Wave off Kanagawa.” A phrase in the book deeply engraved in my heart. “These waves are claws, the boat is caught in them, you can feel it.” Emotions come from true lines rather than accurate drawings. That’s how art captures people’s hearts. There was no special destination on Memorial Day, but rather, such light steps took me into a deeper time. Next step is Ellie’s. When you open the cool glass door and enter, the cozy and warm atmosphere here firmly holds your heart. I ordered a cup of coffee, and the elegant leaf art spread on the latte was a work of art in itself. I quietly drink the latte and slowly put together the conclusion of today. And here — a small library where books breathe under a Japanese parasol that covers the entire ceiling. As I walked through the structure where light poured down and the dozens of bookshelves, I suddenly felt, “This time was the comfort I needed.” The silence that was neither too big nor too small, the smell of books, and my own pace. Today’s trip was not a trip far away, but a journey close to my heart. A space and art that touch me more deeply than a single word, and a time to meet myself again that I had forgotten. A day like this is special enough. From the latte art at Ellie’s Cafe to works by Van Gogh and Hokusai, to a library under a parasol that covers the entire ceiling. A sentimental walk through art on Memorial Day.
